The Shigatse Prefecture is located in the southwestern part of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, between the middle of the Himalayas and the middle of Gangdise-Nyenchen Tanggula Mounytains, and borders Nepal, Bhutan and India. The Yarlung Tsangpo River flows through it and Mount Qomolangma (Everest), the highest peak in the world, is located in Tingri County. The Sangzhuzi Castle in Shigatse and the Old Castle Gyantse Dzong were political and educational center. There are several famous monasteries, such as Tashilhunpo Monastery, Palkhor Monastery, Sakya Monastery, and several ports, such as Yadong Port, Zhangmu Port, Kyirong Port. The six famous valleys at the south foot of Himalayas of Shigatse are called “Little Jiangnan in Tibet” (Jiangnan, the regions south of middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River): Yadong Valley, Chentang Valley, Gama Valley, Rongxia Valley, Zhangmu Valley and Kyirong Valley.
