Tsetang, Shannan, Cradle of Tibetan Culture
Shannan Prefecture is located in the middle and lower reaches of main stream of Yarlung Tsangpo River, and south borders Indian and Bhutan with more than 600 kilometers boundary line. Shannan Prefecture is the cradle of Tibetan ancient civilization. About 40000 to 50000 years ago, Tibetan ancestors have lived in Yarlung River Valley. Today, “Suo Dang”, a land in Sare Village nearby Tsetang Town, is the first field in Tibet. And there is the first palace - Yongbulakhang Palace in Tsetang, the first Tibetan Buddhism monastery - Samye Monastery was established here in 779.
